PLUS: Peer Leaders

PLUS Peer

The purpose of the PLUS Team is to create a culture on campus and in our community where inclusion is a reality for everyone.

PLUS is all about feeling the human need to belong, we all need someone to be there for us and that is what we are, there for you. PLUS is out to break up cliques and bring our campus together.

Our goal is to protect, connect, and educate students in creating a culture on campus and in the community where inclusion is a reality for everyone. We are based on the idea of actions, identity, and purpose and keep them in constant cycle leading to the success of a person and/or entity. PLUS engages a group of individuals in significant actions. These actions develop each person’s sense of belonging to a group identity and sense of a community. By establishing the PLUS forums on campus, schools are able to assess their students’ emotional feelings. When a student goes through a forum they feel a healthy sense of belonging in their environment, which positively effects their motivation, success, and happiness.

Schools need a positive group of peers for students to belong to and feel welcomed in. This pro-social bonding and empowering in our youth is what optimizes the youth development and strategies invested in the PLUS program. The PLUS Program is one of the few approaches in education which utilizes the natural channels of peer influence to address critical issues that impact the positive youth development. Our program focuses on including a diverse cross-section of the population of each individual school.

PLUS Promotes:

+Bonding

+Resilience

+Social, Emotional, Cognitive,Behavioral, and Moral Competence

The PLUS Pledge:

I pledge from this day onward to do my best to interrupt prejudice and to stop those who, because of hate, would hurt, harass, or violate the civil rights of anyone. I will try at all times to be aware of my own biases against people who are different from myself. I will ask questions about cultures, religions, and races that I don't understand. I will speak out against anyone who mocks, sees to intimidate or actually hurts someone of a different race, religion, ethnic group, or sexual orientation. I will reach out to support those who are targets of harassment. I will think about specific ways my school, other students and my community can promote respect for people and create a prejudice-free zone. I firmly believe that one person can make a difference and that no person can be an "innocent bystander" when it comes to opposing hate.

If you would like to be invited to a PLUS Forum, just tell any PLUS Leader, contact Mr. Butler, or Mrs. Baker, or email Mrs. Baker: [email protected]

PLUS stands for Peer Leaders Uniting Students. A PLUS Forum is a powerful and fun-filled morning of activities completely run by your fellow students, who are on the PLUS Team.

In a PLUS Forum, students on our campus come together to make new friends, as we promote diversity. Typically, groups on campus segregate themselves by different stereotypes. A forum works to break these stereotypes and create friendships with students on campus that would normally not interact. These new friendships created work to counteract against racism and cliques.

A PLUS Forum consists of a group of students at a given time, as they are led through surveys, interactive activities, and small groups. Anonymous surveys are given to student participants at the beginning of a forum and these surveys help to inform students, PLUS Leaders, as well as teachers and administration of issues that are prevalent on our campus, as well as issues that need to be addressed with our student body. We address these issues later in the forum based on each groups’ specific needs. We then lead student participants through activities to bond and break the ice.

These activities work to make participants feel more open and comfortable with other students and PLUS Leaders alike. We then close our forums with “small groups”. These small groups are used to give students an open forum to voice issues from campus. They give students a safe place where any student can feel comfortable talking. The surveys guide and influence the PLUS Program's actions on campus and in the community.

If you have any questions about the PLUS program, please contact the PLUS Team Advisors, Mrs. Baker in the Counseling Office or Mr. Butler in Room 460.
